Enerize Corporation continues to dramatically increase properties of PV modules encapsulated with innovative nanostructured transparent polymer for replacing glass on the front side of PV modules.

 

Innovative PV modules with nanostructured transparent polymer that replaces glass on PV modules open a new area of application of solar cells, including hybrid systems for electric vehicles and space equipment. Enerize’s innovative materials and technology is a breakthrough based on the patent pending nanostructured transparent polymer (NSTP), which replaces glass and provides a lot of benefits for PV modules. These benefits are based on the following unique combination of NSTP properties:

 

Key Elements of the Enerize Nanostructured Transparent Polymer:

  • Enerize’s encapsulating polymer layers contain in their structure the nanostructured clusters with sizes from 20 to 100 nanometers, and micro-domains from 15 to 120 microns, which play the role of micro lenses, which increase the concentration of light reaching the semiconductor layer. This results in the concentration of light and increases the efficiency of PV modules. 

  • Initial liquid composition of the transparent polymer material is applied directly to the PV module surface. Process of polymerization proceeds at low temperatures (80*C).

  • High transparency (including UV area).

  • Flexibility, which is important for thin film flexible solar cells.

  • High level of adhesion to various materials, which eliminates the need for the adhesives required with glass (like EVA) and some other polymers. 

  • Hermetic sealing (waterproof) and UV protection.

  • Eliminates the multi-layer structure including the reflective surfaces present with glass. 

  • The transparent polymer can be formed as a flat smooth surface or as a “crinkle coat”, which provides an additional positive effect for increasing the PV modules efficiency.

  • NSTP that encapsulates the solar cell has only one layer of Enerize nanostructured transparent polymer as compared to PV modules laminated with glass or encapsulated with multilayer structure of other polymers.

  • Using the NSTP instead of glass for PV modules dramatically decreases the weight of PV modules compared to PV modules laminated with glass or encapsulated with multilayer structure of other polymers. 

  • The transparent polymer can be formed as a flat smooth surface or as a “crinkle coat”, which provides additional positive effect for increasing the efficiency of PV modules.

Photos of the tests of Enerize PV modules encapsulated under artificial hurricane conditions. Tests were performed by Florida International University.

 

During the tests, artificial hurricane conditions were modeled using a special test bench. Test results confirmed the stability of parameters of the solar cells which were coated with Enerize nanostructured transparent polymer.
